BASEMENT SAINTS INTERVIEW

How has the reaction to your latest CD been?

“Actually pretty good, way better than we expected! Lots of radio airplay and we even hit the swiss charts for a week! That was a pleasant and unexpected fuckin’ surprise, especially for an unsigned rock band!”

What record/tape/cd/digital format music album inspired you to take up music?

“Wow that’s a hard one, I’d say it was much more of a process through all of the formats, don’t really remember the first though, I think it was House of The Rising Sun from The Animals.”

What was the first LP/tape/CD you bought with your own money?

“Cold Fact by Sixto Rodriguez in Cape Town in 2009, I had no idea who he was and he wasn’t really famous anywhere other than South Africa. Then I forgot it in the rental car we used to cruise around there.”

What is the main goal you wish to achieve through your music, and what do you hope people get out of your music?

“Maybe a bit of an inspiration towards world peace, to impress that one girl I always think of and mainly to achieve a career of daily fun!”

What should people know about you?

“We’re not very complicated and we don’t bite, come say hi after the gig, we like that. And I understand Dutsch, I speak Afrikaans”

If you weren't a musician, what career path would you take?

“Anton: I was supposed to be an engineer, I did draw parts of the new aircraft at Pilatus Aircrafts., but now I’ve drifted to freelance graphic design and bartending, we don’t really earn anything personally with music, the money from gigs goes to expanding our gear and bus.

Tobias still works fulltime as a painter and Samuel as a polymechanic and apprentice trainer.

What’s the hardest part about being a musician and what’s the best?

“Well the hardest and best thing at the same time is probably the popularity, getting recognized sometimes helps to break the ice at parties, but then again you have to listen to a load of shit sometimes, even if you just want to hang out. Getting to see the world and even places in your own country you would otherwise not visit is pretty cool though, especially getting to meet so many cool people.”

What or who was your biggest influence as an artist?

“We all agree on Led Zeppelin.”

What advice do you have for young musicians?

“Don’t give up and heed the admin work, half of an album is pure administration like mailing, budget planning, artwork etc. Don’t force yourself to play something you don’t like.”

True or false: It is the duty of an artist to put his personal emotions into the music he plays.

“False, as a musician you don’t really have a choice, so it can’t be a duty.”

True or false: “Music is my first love”.

“True, girlfriends are having a hard time with us.”

The best and worst gig you ever played?

“Well that’s one gig, we had a two-week hiatus and then straight off hometown gig on a very big stage and event in Solothurn. Sammy didn’t pack his drum carpet because there was one on the stage, but the band that played before us took it with them so the drums kept on moving around and slipping off the stage. We improvised and I (Anton) Kept putting my foot on the riser during songs. After each song I would shove the bassdrum back into position and correct the microphone. During his solo I sat in front of it. People thought it was part of the show. During one of the highlight one of my strings snapped, that wouldn’t be a big problem, but I’m the whole rhythm section, bass and guitar hooked through my rig, but no one really noticed. We had fun and the vibes were soooo good! Otherwise there were gigs we had to break off because the people went completely nuts, and one time there was a sofa from the lounge surfing the crowd.”

Are there any songs you've done that you wish you hadn't ?

“Nope”

Is there a particular song or musical passage that never fails to move you emotionally?

“Lullaby – JJ Grey & Mofro, Bohemian Rhapsody -Queen, Helvegen – Wardruna and basically anything from the Doors. Puts me in another world”

What does the next 6 months look like for you?

“Swiss openair festivals, Spain tour, Germany, Holland, Winter fun and a whole lotta fun! Hopefully world domination and the end of capitalistic slavery. Fuck knows what could happen!”
