If you have to describe your music in three or four words , what would you call it?

Smoky bars and minor chords .

What can people expect to see at your live performance?

Every time I play a song live it is different. I never have a set list so I react to the audience. I love playing like that. It’s so exciting. I love a lot of improvised music. Keith Jarrett is the obvious example. What I do on stage is develop and reinterpret the songs, look for something new each time I play. Baudelaire talked about ‘the voyage in search of the new’.

Does anyone in particular influence your musical talent?

I have always been drawn to outsiders. Musicians who don’t fit into a specific genre but have their own unique sound .My main influences are John Martyn, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, JJ Cale and Richie Havens. They each bring something unique to the table.

Who were you, or would you be nervous to meet?

Gennady Golovkin (terrifying middleweight boxer) … thankfully we have never met.

As an artist is there anything special you hope to accomplish ?

I want to keep developing as a songwriter and improving as a musician. As an artist, I focus on the task at hand – whether it’s live or in the studio. ?I have released seven albums and they have all been different. ?My first three albums were recorded at home in London. Then I recorded in Dublin with Trevor Hutchinson from The Waterboys as producer. The last three albums have been recorded in Austin, Texas with producer Mark Hallman (Carole King, Ani Di Franco).

The latest album ‘The Only Good Addiction Is Love’ is my best work so far. Until the next one?

I love the song ‘Rothko’ on the new album. I really love the chord progression and the lyrics.

Mark Rothko, the painter who inspired the song is an incredible artist. His paintings are very ambient and powerful. Beautiful.

The best and worst gig you ever played?

The worst gigs never happened. You just move on. Keep moving forward. A couple of the special gigs would include Glastonbury, opening for Robert Cray in Amsterdam. I played overlooking the lake in Lausanne once. That was pretty cool.

What is the furthest show from your home you ever played?

Australia. I toured there for three weeks and shared the stage with Arlo Guthrie. Legend??

are there any songs you've done that you wish you hadn't ?

I have dozens of songs that I have never recorded. There are so many. But when it comes to going into the studio I’m very brutal with which songs make the album. There are always songs left over. I wouldn’t release anything if I didn’t like it.

Why did you write or decide to play '' we can burn"

I started writing that song about 7 years ago. I had the chord progression but couldn’t get the lyrics right. Finally it all just came together about a month before I travelled to Austin to record the album.

Where would you like to find yourself in ten years?.

I’m constantly trying to improve and develop my sound, so hopefully in ten years it’ll be even better.

I also love collaboration with musicians and producers. There are loads of musicians I would love to play with. Too many to name. ??

Is there a particular song or musical passage that never fails to move you emotionally?

I love Small Hours by John Martyn. It never fails to move me. He recorded the album version outside by a lake in the early hours of the morning. It reminds me a bit of Rothko’s paintings. It stops time and takes you to a magical place.

Sean Taylor - The Only Good Addiction Is Love

The Only Good Addiction Is Love is een album die elke muziekliefhebber moet horen.
